Dryer Running but Not Heating? 6 Things to Check First (Eastvale, CA)

Your dryer runs, the drum turns, and an hour later the clothes are still damp and cold. It is one of the most common calls we get from homeowners in Eastvale, and the good news is that the cause is often simple. Here are the things you can safely check yourself before you call for service. Most of them apply to any brand, and we have added a few notes for Samsung dryers, which we see often in Eastvale homes.

Safety first: unplug the dryer (or switch off its circuit breaker) before you touch anything behind it or inside it. If you have a gas dryer and you smell gas, do not touch any switches, leave the house and call your gas company from outside.

1. Make sure the cycle actually uses heat

It sounds obvious, but it happens a lot. Settings like Air Fluff, Air Dry, Wrinkle Release or a timed dry set to “no heat” will tumble your clothes without heating them. Choose a normal cycle with a regular heat level and run a small load to test it.

2. Clean the lint filter and look at the vent

A blocked airflow path is the number one reason dryers stop drying well. Pull out the lint screen and clean it. If it looks greasy or water does not pass through it easily, wash it with warm soapy water and let it dry completely.

Then check the vent hose behind the dryer. It should not be crushed, kinked or packed with lint. Go outside and find where the vent leaves the house. Run the dryer and feel for a strong, warm flow of air. If you feel only a weak puff, the vent duct is likely clogged. Many Samsung models also show a Check Filter or vent warning when airflow is poor.

A clogged vent is not just a drying problem. It makes the dryer run hot, it can trip a safety part (see below), and lint buildup is a real fire risk. If your vent run is long or goes up through the roof, it is worth having it cleaned.

3. Electric dryer: check the circuit breaker

An electric dryer uses a 240-volt circuit with a double breaker. If one half of that breaker trips, the motor and drum can still run while the heating element gets no power. That gives you exactly this symptom: everything works except the heat. Go to your electrical panel, find the dryer breaker, switch it fully off and then back on.

4. Gas dryer: check the gas supply

For a gas dryer, make sure the gas shut-off valve behind the dryer is open (the handle runs in line with the pipe). If other gas appliances in the house are working, the supply is probably fine. If you can safely see through the small window near the burner on some models, you may notice the igniter glowing but no flame. That usually points to a part inside, not something you should take apart yourself.

5. Don’t overload it

A very full drum, or a load of heavy items like towels, comforters and jeans together, can take much longer to dry and may seem like “no heat.” Try a medium load and see if the result is different.

6. Look for an error code

Many newer dryers display a code when something is wrong. On Samsung dryers, a heating-related code (often shown as HE or similar) tells you the dryer is not reaching temperature. Write down the exact code and your model number. Your owner’s manual will list what each code means, and it helps our technicians bring the right parts.

What usually causes “no heat” inside the dryer

If none of the checks above solve it, the problem is most likely one of these parts:

  • Thermal fuse: a small safety part that cuts the heat if the dryer gets too hot. It often blows because of a clogged vent, so if it fails, it is a good idea to have the vent cleaned too. Never bypass a thermal fuse; it is there to prevent fires.
  • Heating element (electric dryers): the coil can break and stop heating completely.
  • Igniter, flame sensor or gas valve coils (gas dryers): any of these can stop the burner from lighting or staying lit.
  • Thermostats and temperature sensor: these control the heat and can fail open or give wrong readings.
  • Control board: less common, but possible on newer electronic models.

These parts are tested with a meter, and some are behind panels that need to come off. If you are not comfortable working with electrical or gas parts, this is the point to call a professional.

When to call a pro

Call for service if:

  • You have checked the cycle, filter, vent and breaker or gas valve, and there is still no heat.
  • The dryer shows an error code that keeps coming back.
  • You notice a burning smell, the top of the dryer gets very hot, or it shuts off in the middle of a cycle.
  • You smell gas at any time (call your gas company first).
